Final Fantasy and Nintendo have a rich history together, even if their paths haven't always intertwined. Hironobu Sakaguchi's long-running fantasy RPG series began on the original Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, serving as a watershed moment that would influence future generations of turn-based RPGs to come and laying the groundwork for future installments to build on. In the years since, however, the franchise has branched off and grown in other places, releasing its most well-known installment, Final Fantasy VII, on the original PlayStation and remaining attached to the Sony console family in one way or another since. The last mainline entry to appear on a Nintendo console, not including the FFVII remake series, was Final Fantasy XII, thanks to The Zodiac Age.
