Lanterns Actor Hints He’s Secretly Been Cast as a Much Bigger DCU Character Than Fans Realize

Lanterns actor Garret Dillahunt teased that he might play a much bigger role in the DCU. This role is more important than fans realize. The new series will debut soon in August and introduce audiences to John Stewart and Hal Jordan in the DCU. Dillahunt is playing William Macon Sr. in the upcoming HBO show, but it appears that might be a “front” of some kind.

“It might be a front for some other kind of character that’s very familiar to you all,” Dillahunt said in an interview with Syfy. “I don’t want to rule out the possibility that maybe ‘William Macon’ is just a secret identity that had to be created. It was fun to be able to create him from scratch—at least that facet of the character.”

What do we know about Garret Dillahunt’s Lanterns character so far?

This isn’t the first time Dillahunt has teased something bigger and more sinister regarding his character. Comic book fans can attest to knowing nothing about Macon Sr., as he is an original character specifically for the show. Macon Sr. has been described as an “imposing, influential and affluent figure” in the rural Nebraska town that Stewart and Jordan visit in the show.

Last year, Dillahunt teased that he was perhaps playing someone else in disguise, and even teased that he was aware of the fan theories about him being Black Hand.

In DC comics, Black Hand uses the black power ring to torment Green Lantern. His real name is William Derek Hand, thus leading fans to believe that “William Macon Sr.” is a fake name created to keep his identity secret. Fans will have to wait a little longer to learn the truth.

Lanterns premieres on HBO and HBO Max on August 16, 2026.
