Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira revealed why one beloved DC character never made it into the DCU film. The screenwriter broke down the creative and practical concerns behind cutting the fan-favorite from the movie.

Why introducing Comet the Super-Horse in Supergirl concerned Ana Nogueira

Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nogueira told Entertainment Weekly that Comet the Super-Horse posed major concerns for the DCU film. She feared general audiences would find his sudden introduction confusing alongside Krypto the Super-Dog. Nogueira also described the character as simply too much animal for one movie to handle.

“It’s a lot to ask of a general audience to bring in Comet the horse,” Nogueira said. She acknowledged comic book fans deeply love the character and would celebrate his screen appearance. However, she believed casual moviegoers would react with bewilderment at a super-powered horse arriving mid-story.

“There’s so much that the general population would go, ‘What? There’s suddenly a horse?'” she explained. Nogueira noted that comics fans and general audiences would have completely opposite reactions to Comet. “Anybody else going to see the movie would be like, ‘I don’t understand,'” she added about non-comics viewers.

The film already dedicated significant screen time to Krypto across multiple storylines. Flashbacks showed Kara and Krypto first meeting on the decaying Krypton before traveling to Earth together. Nogueira felt balancing two super-powered animals would stretch the narrative too thin. “I couldn’t do a horse and a dog,” she stated about the practical creative limitation.

Comet played a pivotal role in Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Woman of Tomorrow comic series. In that story, Krem banished Kara to a distant planet during their conflict. Comet helped her travel to the edge of the galaxy to thwart Krem’s efforts against her.

The character also carries a notably complicated backstory rooted in 1960s DC Comics lore. Comet first appeared in 1962’s Adventure Comics #293 as a centaur named Brion from Ancient Greece. A rival wizard’s curse permanently trapped him in horse form before magic granted him enhanced abilities. The film already needed to introduce Supergirl, Lobo, and the mythology of Argo City to audiences.

Supergirl is now playing in theaters.
