Miley Cyrus has reflected on years of family drama in conversation with Monica Lewinsky, claiming that her parents' relationship issues started before she was born.

As part of the press tour for her album Something Beautiful, the singer sat down with Lewinsky on her podcast Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky and opened up about her famous family's rocky past.

"My family and I have had a really difficult what do you call your decade... a dark decade," Miley said, borrowing a term that Lewinsky used earlier in their conversation.

"Half of us weren't speaking to each other at one point."

Miley alluded to this "dark decade" starting when her parents Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus first filed for divorce in 2010, and then again in 2013.

The couple reconciled both times but eventually divorced officially in 2022.

Throughout the past decade, Miley says the family rift has been consistent but she was determined for things to change.

"We cleaned all that up. That was a really important part of my year. This year was all of my family putting those lines of communications back together a lot," she said.

Miley admitted that she felt "a lot of loyalty towards her mum" during the divorce which likely added to the rift in the family but shared that she quickly learned "what happens when you don't clean things up as they're happening."

Navigating the rift between herself, her family and her five siblings grew difficult as conflict piled up.

"They really do stack up and then all of a sudden you go, 'Oh my god, it's been 10 years and this is a mess that I barely even know how to start. This is emotional hoarding'," she explained.

In attempt to reconcile the family rift, Miley had an unconventional approach.

"I just kind of bust through the pile that's stacked and just go, 'I'm here. You're here. Let's start by having a good time together'. And then as we start bringing some happiness and joy into each other's life, then we'll just be in a better place to have these conversations. Because I'd rather get it balanced first," the Flowers singer said.

As for whether the family considered family counselling to address their years of conflict, Miley said it wasn't on the cards.

"We're so messy we didn't even do any of that," she said.

"To get each other in a room to even get to counselling would have been a war. So it was easier to just go, 'white flag'.

"I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place that I always had the the white flag when they came to talk to me."

Later in the chat, Miley recalled her parents filing for divorce when she was 14 years and admitted to reading the divorce papers.

"Of course, at 14 years old you're not supposed to read the divorce papers and I didn't tell anybody, I didn't tell either of my parents that I had," she said.

Despite being a teenager when she read their divorce papers, Miley believes that their issues as a couple began long before then.

"My parents, their stuff started before I was born," Miley shared claiming that they were both "chronically polite" which prevented them from addressing their issues.

"My mum will stay in something that makes her uncomfortable for way too long, not wanting to hurt somebody. And at the end, it's just so excruciating for her," Miley explained.

"And my dad does the same thing but he processes it differently where he doesn't want to say or do something maybe that would hurt you so he does it in a way that you will not see because what you don't know won't hurt you."
