Willem Dafoe Eyed for Nosferatu Director’s A Christmas Carol Remake

Willem Dafoe could lead the cast of Robert Eggers’ cinematic adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Eggers is reportedly writing the script and will eventually helm the project for Warner Bros. Previously, Dafoe and Eggers have worked together on The Lighthouse (2019), The Northman (2022), and Nosferatu (2024).

Dafoe could potentially essay the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in Eggers’ iteration of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas ghost story, A Christmas Carol. Deadline cited “insiders” to claim that even though the negotiations aren’t yet happening with the cast, Eggers is writing Scrooge with Dafoe in mind. Aside from writing and directing, Eggers will produce the project alongside Maiden Voyage’s Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus.

As indicated above, Dafoe and Eggers have enjoyed a productive professional relationship over the years. In The Lighthouse, Willem Dafoe played Thomas Wake, one of the two protagonists. He essayed the role of Heimir the Fool in The Northman. As for Nosferatu, Dafoe was the enigmatic philosopher Prof. Albin Eberhart von Franz in that movie.

In a December 2024 interview with CBR, Eggers reflected on how it was to work with Dafoe. “I mean, Willem just likes to jump in and do! I mean, obviously, he’s one of the greatest actors of all time, but also working with him on set is also a pleasure, because he can just inhabit the world so completely and so effortlessly,” he said. “I mean, I don’t know what else you can ask for,” Eggers added.

A Christmas Carol is one of the most iconic stories by Charles Dickens. First published in 1843, it’s a Christmas story that revolves around infamous miser Ebenezer Scrooge, as four different spirits pay him a visit. Over the years, there have been a considerable number of adaptations of the story. This includes live-action movies such as Scrooge, or, Marley’s Ghost (1901); Scrooge (1951); Scrooge & Marley (2012); and Spirited (2022).
