Bluey and her familyWhether you’re a parent, have young children in your family or even just spend the occasional afternoon looking after your friends’ kids, the chances are you’re familiar with the TV phenomenon Bluey.
The Australian animated series centres around a family of colourful dogs, and has been widely praised for the way it teaches lessons around social themes in a humorous and unpatronising way (plenty of adults will be happy to confess that they’ve kept watching Bluey long after they’ve put their little ones to bed).
It was a cause for celebration, then, when it was announced by Disney that the canine heroine was heading for the big screen.
Or, it would have been, had the film not made one major change to the format that has split opinion right down the middle.
At the D23 fan event last week, Disney shared a first teaser for the Bluey movie, which features the titular character reimagined in three-dimensional CGI, rather than the 2D animated style of the original series.
Reacting to the announcement in the days that followed, many were quick to voice their upset at Bluey’s discerning new look…
No disrespect to the filmmakers, who I’m sure have done a spectacular job, but the decision to render The Bluey Movie using 3D animation seems idk… miscalculated? Unintentionally dismissive of the 2D medium?
The series won multiple Emmy Awards without this visual ‘upgrade’ pic.twitter.com/C4qfWlPI2T
why couldn’t it be in the original art style 😭
— wenli 🐜¹² (@gyubinwoo) August 15, 2026While I’m actually looking forward to this, I got to ask why the art style change. The 3d looks better than the supposed leaks but the original art style is iconic, so why alter it?
— Ashley Blackburn (@aab0289) August 15, 2026Ugh. Was super excited, but why not hand drawn animation?
— Scott Jerry (@Scott_Jerry) August 16, 2026‘Bluey’ fans are criticizing the movie’s new animation style and calling for the franchise to remain in 2D:
“This doesn’t feel like Bluey at all.” pic.twitter.com/dGC4a95SAv
Can we get enough bad press for the new CGI look for the Bluey movie that Disney is forced to change it?
— Sameyeiz (@sameyeiz10) August 16, 2026oh nooooo the Bluey movie is this 3D animation
part of what makes @OfficialBlueyTV great is its simplicity and authenticity. pic.twitter.com/g3CSXOnBIY
3D for a bluey movie is a mistake IMO. (itll still sell millions) but artistically its been spayed. https://t.co/M6oITtXE4l
— Gothalion (@Gothalion) August 15, 2026Catching up on D23 (or whatever the number is now
Disappointed that Bluey has gone 3 d for the feature film
The oldschool style is one of the best things about it.
That’s said frozen 3 looks like itl be epic.
bruh. wdym the bluey movie is 3D animation 😭 isn't one of the main reasons ppl like bluey Because of the beautiful 2D scenes ?? don't get me wrong , it looks really cute , but what was the purpose?? (ngl we Know the reason bc it's disney and they want cheaper costs)
— rahim 🎭🎉☪️ (@andrahimiet) August 15, 2026i think it looks good and it does look like bluey and translated really well into 3D , however i really am tired of this constant "need" to change 2D cartoons to 3D esp when a huge draw for bluey is the beautiful 2D animation https://t.co/pnwC8d1kij
— rahim 🎭🎉☪️ (@andrahimiet) August 18, 2026Others, meanwhile, were happy to take any new Bluey they could get, and were excited at the prospect of a cinema trip to see the movie in the not-too-distant future…
It's literally the same art style just in 3D.
A 2D animated Bluey movie would've look gorgeous, but it's not like the characters were completely redesigned. They look the same, hardly anything is different compared to the show. You guys gotta stop complaining. https://t.co/ifYhPydTT4
Wow, grown ups overreacting! I think this movie looks absolutely cute and so does my daughter. You know there are kids involved with this film and they worked very hard. Way to go to the grown ups dragging a film because they are not happy with the animation 🙄
— andromeda (@andromeedae) August 15, 2026real bluey fans should understand that ludo isnt a feature animation studio and cosmic dino is one of the best producers of kids cgi animation here in aus and just this image alone has convinced me that they've adapted the 2d style perfectly into theirs https://t.co/q7uWzoV56B
— jordan // 𓅰 (@sorrow_sunny) August 16, 2026as a grown woman who lieks watching bluey, i think the 3d animation was jarring for like 3 seconds but it looks so cute and i can tell there's a bit of "playing the camera", they definitely warp the models a bit it seems
they're also so cute awwhh awhhh https://t.co/x5ynx7PiiH
Bluey And Bingo Look Really Cuddly
Seriously, Why Are There People Complaining About The Animation https://t.co/SdGtvL00yg
In 3D? And it actually looks good? Highest grossing movie of 2027, I’m calling it now
— Jedi Goofy (@JediGoofy) August 15, 2026Usually I wouldn’t trust it since I liked the 2D style, but this looks fine enough.
— notional-jumbo90 (@NotionalJumbo90) August 16, 2026Am I the only one that actually likes the CG designs for Bluey-
LIKE. LOOK AT THEM!!! THEY'RE SO CUTE!!!! pic.twitter.com/r6QkdSFIzZ
Speaking at a D23 panel, series creator Joe Brumm pointed out that he had been toying with 3D animation since he was at art college, and this was a medium he’d always wanted to pursue.
“When it came time to do this movie, it actually wasn’t a hard decision [to make it 3D animation],” he said. “That doesn’t mean I don’t love the 2D show, but… we’re always striving to show the beauty of nature in the show, and I wanted to have every tool available to capture a beautiful blade of grass…”
He added: “I wanted kids to be able to feel like they could reach in and give these little dogs a scratch on their furry heads. So, it had to be 3D.”
The Bluey Movie is currently slated to hit cinemas in August 2027.
