The success of Obsession and Backrooms this year will likely alter the filmmaking landscape as we know it, with studios doubling down on projects aimed at younger audiences and betting big on ambitious filmmakers. The two movies were released in close proximity to each other, creating a sort of “Barbenheimer” effect for Gen Z horror and grossing a combined total of around $900 million worldwide. However, the seeds for the films' success were sown very recently. In the months leading up to Obsession and Backrooms, a worrying number of franchise horror movies underperformed at the box office while standalone originals such as Weapons broke out. One of the biggest original horror hits during this time is now streaming on Hulu, while a sequel remains in active development.
