Universal Pictures reportedly spent approximately $658.8 million making 2022’s “Jurassic World: Dominion,” making it seemingly the most expensive film ever made according to Fortune magazine.

The outlet quotes a recent UK tax filing. Financial statements reportedly indicate the studio has beaten a record held by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which reportedly cost $638.9 million before its rebate.

Filmed at the peak of the pandemic, the piece says that Universal had to adopt costly safety protocols during production and faced months of delays while still having to maintain production in a state of readiness.

That meant having to pay for soundstages, leased equipment that went unused for long periods, and budgeting for staff ranging from security to department heads. The cast’s five-month stint at the opulent Langley Hotel, where rooms cost over $600 a night, didn’t help the bottom line either.

The financial statements are filed in stages, with the most recently filed latest set covering up to December 31st 2024 with $74.9 million added to the tally that year. That said, the studio did reportedly receive a $127.8 million rebate from the UK government, bringing its net budget down to $531 million.

‘Dominion pulled in around $1 billion at the box-office, which means the studio’s share of ticket sales effectively covered the production costs. Revenue from disc, streaming and merchandise brought in plenty more revenue.

‘Dominion’ was the most expensive of the recent ‘Jurassic’ films, with “Jurassic World Rebirth” famously cutting costs significantly compared to its predecessors.
