It seems the Spider-Man 4 trailer deploys deliberate trickery to obscure her identity. At the 56-second mark, a dark hooded figure appears, but the scene buries their face in shadow. Now, the enhanced shot appears to show it’s Sadie Sink as the only thing visible, which matches her eyes.

The real sleight of hand arrives around 1:30. Peter enters a wrecked location and declares, “You’re not going to get away with this,” only for Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner to reply, “But he might.” The trailer is then cut to a shot of a mysterious hooded person standing in front of multiple computers and three large windows.

Moments later, the Hulk stands amid the rubble of an apartment that seemingly features three identical windows. The rapid editing works to convince viewers that Banner is the hooded figure. A side-by-side comparison, however, reveals they are entirely different characters.

Set leaks and subtle trailer clues now stitch together a compelling clue. Photographs taken during production show Sink wearing a green jacket and a tan hoodie. The new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer features a character in an identical jacket and hoodie combination, appearing twice in quick succession. Immediately after, a suited man identified by subtitles as X-Men villain Bill Metzger warns Spider-Man about “a threat we can’t control; one we can’t even see.” The language mirrors the official synopsis, which describes “a powerful villain no one can even see.”

Rumours have long pointed toward Jean Grey, a character Sink physically resembles. Telepathy ranks among Jean Grey’s signature abilities as seen in the trailer. Whether Sink’s character is the main villain or a looming secondary threat remains unclear.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in theaters on July 31.
