Key Points
We expect the IRS to open the 2027 tax filing season on Monday, January 25, 2027. If the IRS accepts your e-filed return that first week, your direct deposit should arrive by about February 5.Most e-filed returns with direct deposit get a refund within 21 days of acceptance. Refunds that claim the EITC or ACTC can’t go out before February 15 by law, so expect those around March 1 or 2, 2027.Paper refund checks are no longer the default. A return filed without bank information gets its refund frozen and a CP53E notice, which can add four to six weeks.

The 2027 IRS refund schedule starts the day the IRS opens e-filing, and we expect that to be Monday, January 25, 2027. Most taxpayers get their IRS tax refund within 21 days of the IRS accepting an e-filed return. Your exact date depends on when the IRS accepts your return, how you file and which credits you claim.

We’ve published this refund calendar every tax season since 2014, and readers post their actual deposit dates in the comments each year. Those reports, plus past IRS refund cycles, are how we build the estimates below. This year’s calendar covers tax year 2026 returns, which are due Thursday, April 15, 2027, along with the other 2027 tax due dates.

The IRS hasn’t announced the 2027 start date yet. It usually does in early January, and we’ll update this page the day it does. Until then, every date below assumes a January 25 opening, which fits the pattern the IRS has followed since 2022. If you’re getting ready to file, our ranking of the best tax software can help you pick a filing option.

2027 IRS Tax Refund Calendar

If the IRS opens on January 25, 2027, a return accepted in the first week should see a direct deposit by about February 5. Each later week of acceptances lines up with a deposit the following Friday. Find the week the IRS accepted your return in the calendar below, or enter the date in the refund date finder. Returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit follow a different schedule, covered below.

These dates are estimates, not IRS promises. The IRS sends direct deposits every business day during tax season, so we list the end of the week you should expect your money. Your exact date appears in Where’s My Refund once the IRS approves your refund, and our answers to common Where’s My Refund questions explain each status message.

This year’s calendar drops the paper check column. Paper refund checks stopped being the default in late 2025, so mailing dates no longer follow a weekly IRS cycle. If you don’t have a bank account, our article on how to get a tax refund without a bank account covers prepaid card options that still count as direct deposit.

Key Tax Dates For The 2027 Filing Season

The 2027 filing season covers tax year 2026 returns, and the dates that matter run from late December 2026 through October 2027. The IRS has set some of them, including the April 15, 2027 deadline. The opening day and the deposit dates are our estimates until the IRS announces its schedule, and our list of tax due dates adds quarterly estimated tax deadlines.

Filing a late 2025 return before year-end? The IRS stops accepting e-filed returns at 11:59 a.m. Eastern on December 26, 2026, according to an IRS e-file shutdown notice. After that, e-filing reopens with the 2027 season. Most free tax software lets you prepare a return during the shutdown and holds it until the IRS opens.

When Will The IRS Start Accepting Tax Returns In 2027?

We expect the IRS to start accepting 2026 tax returns on Monday, January 25, 2027. The IRS hasn’t announced the date, but every filing season since 2017 has opened on a Monday except 2021, and every season since 2022 has opened between January 23 and January 29. Our page on when IRS e-file opens will post the official date as soon as it’s out.

Two patterns point to the same day. The IRS has opened on either the Monday after Martin Luther King Jr. Day or the last Monday of January. MLK Day falls on January 18, 2027, so January 25 is both. The next Monday is February 1, which would fall outside the window the IRS has used since 2022.

The 2026 season showed how firm the schedule is. It was the first filing season under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, many of its provisions applied back to 2025, and the IRS went from about 102,000 employees to about 74,000 during 2025, Yahoo Finance reported. The IRS still opened on January 26, 2026, as it announced in IR-2026-02. IRS CEO Frank Bisignano later told the Senate Finance Committee it was “the most successful filing season in IRS history.” Our federal tax brackets page covers what the law changed for 2026 returns.

Expect the announcement in the first two weeks of January. The IRS announced the 2026 date on January 8, 2026, and the 2019 date on January 7, 2019. When it does, we’ll rebuild the calendar, the image and the PATH Act refund dates around the official day.

What Could Delay The Start Of The 2027 Tax Season?

A government funding lapse, a late tax law or trouble programming new rules could push the 2027 opening later. Only a late tax law has moved the start into February in recent years. If your own return gets stuck after you file, our list of reasons your tax return could be delayed covers the common causes.

A Government Funding Lapse After December 11

Congress passed a stopgap bill in September that funds the government through December 11, 2026, NPR reported. Another short extension into January, or a lapse, would force the IRS to prepare for filing season under pressure. History suggests a shutdown costs days, not weeks. In 2019, the IRS confirmed a January 28 opening in the middle of a 35-day shutdown and recalled furloughed staff to process returns. Phone lines get harder to reach during a shutdown, so keep our tips on how to contact the IRS handy.

A Year-End Tax Law

A tax bill passed in late December is the bigger threat. A December 27, 2020 relief law pushed the 2021 season to Friday, February 12, because the IRS had to reprogram its systems, Bloomberg Tax reported. We’re watching for a year-end tax package, but as of early November 2026 the odds of a reconciliation bill passing in December look low. If one does pass, a February opening becomes much more likely, and we’d shift every date on the refund calendar to match.

New Rules And Systems To Program

Tax year 2026 returns pick up One Big Beautiful Bill Act changes that start in 2026, such as a new charitable deduction of up to $1,000 ($2,000 for joint filers) for people who take the standard deduction, according to the IRS summary of the law. Businesses that file 1099s also have to switch systems. The IRS FIRE system takes its last filings on November 19, 2026, and 1099s for the 2027 season go through the newer IRIS system. Each change adds risk, though none of these factors moved the 2026 opening date. Employers still have to send your Form W-2 by February 1, 2027.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Tax Refund In 2027?

Most e-filed returns with direct deposit get a refund within 21 days of the date the IRS accepts the return. The clock starts at acceptance, not when you click submit. It counts calendar days, because the IRS processes returns seven days a week during filing season. Our explanation of a tax return covers what the IRS checks along the way.

1. Return Accepted

Once you submit, your return is time-stamped and sent to the IRS. Within 24 to 48 hours, the IRS checks your personal information and either accepts or rejects the return. If you prepare your return with do-it-yourself tax software before e-file opens, the software holds it and sends it on opening day.

2. Refund Approved

After your return clears its checks, the IRS confirms the refund amount and sets a deposit date. That date shows up in Where’s My Refund and the IRS app. If you see a reference code instead of a date, our list of IRS transcript and reference codes explains what it means.

3. Refund Sent

Banks usually post a direct deposit within one to five business days of the IRS sending it. Some post it a day or two early, as our list of bank accounts with early direct deposit shows. Where’s My Refund updates once a day, usually overnight, so checking more often won’t show anything new.

When Will EITC And ACTC Refunds Arrive In 2027?

If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit and e-file early with direct deposit, expect your refund around March 1 or 2, 2027. The PATH Act bars the IRS from issuing these refunds before February 15, and the IRS holds the entire refund, not just the credit. Our page on PATH Act refund dates tracks the exact release each year.

February 15, 2027 falls on Presidents Day, so the release starts after the holiday. In 2026, the IRS targeted around March 2 for the first EITC and ACTC deposits, and Where’s My Refund showed dates for most early filers about a week before. We expect a similar pattern in 2027. The same hold covers the refundable part of the Child Tax Credit.

If the IRS accepts your return after mid-February, the hold no longer adds time and the regular calendar applies. Be wary of refund advance offers that charge fees to get you the money sooner. Our EITC breakdown covers who qualifies and how much the credit is worth for 2026 returns.

Can You Still Get A Paper Refund Check In 2027?

Yes, but only if you take an extra step or qualify for an exception. Paper checks stopped being the default for individual refunds after September 30, 2025, according to the IRS questions and answers on Executive Order 14247. A return filed without bank information now gets its refund frozen and a CP53E notice instead of a check. Our article on tax refunds without a bank account covers prepaid cards and other electronic options.

The CP53E gives you 30 days to add a bank account or request a paper check in your IRS online account, according to the IRS CP53E page. If you do nothing, the IRS mails a check after about six weeks. People without a bank account or an online account can call 800-829-1040 and ask for a waiver, according to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Our Where’s My Refund answers walk through each option.

Waivers aren’t fast either. Checks generally went out about four weeks after a waiver request in 2026, according to the Taxpayer Advocate’s FY 2027 objectives report (PDF File). Unless the IRS changes the process before the season opens, expect the same rules in 2027. A free checking account or one of the best high-yield savings accounts in your own name keeps your refund on the calendar dates above.

What Can Delay Your 2027 Tax Refund?

Paper returns, errors, identity checks, bank account problems and debt offsets cause most refund delays. The IRS catches these during processing, and each one can add weeks to the 21-day estimate. If Where’s My Refund shows code 9001, our explanation of IRS reference code 9001 covers what it means.

Paper Returns

Paper returns take the longest because IRS staff enter them by hand. Paper individual returns took an average of 30 days to process in 2026, up from 16 days in 2025, according to a GAO review of the 2026 filing season. E-filing with direct deposit is the fastest route, and our walkthrough on how to do your own taxes shows how to e-file for free.

Errors And Identity Verification

Small mistakes can hold a refund, such as a misspelled name, a wrong Social Security number or W-2 income that doesn’t match IRS records. If the IRS sends Letter 5071C to confirm your identity, the refund can take up to nine weeks after you verify, according to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. If you think someone filed in your name, follow our steps for what to do if your identity is stolen.

Bank Account Problems

A wrong routing or account number, or an account that isn’t in your name, can get a deposit rejected. Since 2026, a rejected deposit triggers a CP53E freeze instead of an automatic paper check, and you only get one chance to fix it. Double-check your routing number before you file.

Offsets For Past-Due Debts

The Treasury Offset Program can take part or all of a refund for past-due federal or state taxes, child support or defaulted federal student loans. Student loan offsets are paused for now. While involuntary collections remain paused, we expect Treasury to resume them soon. Our explanation of how student loans affect your tax refund walks through the rules.

If you’re in default on federal student loans, act before refunds go out. Our steps to stop a tax offset for student loan debt and the student loan rehabilitation process both remove you from the offset list once they’re complete.

Amended Returns

An amended return on Form 1040-X runs on its own timeline, and the calendar above doesn’t apply to it. The IRS says amended returns can take more than 20 weeks, and status shows in Where’s My Amended Return about three weeks after you file, according to IRS Tax Topic 308. More filing help lives in our tax center.

How Do You Track Your Tax Refund?

Track your refund with Where’s My Refund, the IRS app or your IRS online account. All three show the same status and update once a day. You’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status and the exact refund amount. If you get an error, our list of Where’s My Refund questions and errors explains it.

Where’s My Refund

Where’s My Refund shows three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. Status usually appears within 24 hours of e-file acceptance and about four weeks after you mail a paper return, according to the IRS. The tool shows status for the current year and the two prior years, so it also helps with a late tax refund from 2025.

The IRS App

The IRS replaced the IRS2Go app with the IRS app on September 25, 2026, according to the IRS app FAQ. Refund status still works without signing in. Signed-in users can also see their account transcript, and our explanation of IRS cycle codes helps you read it.

IRS Phone Line

Call 800-829-1954 only if it’s been more than 21 days since e-file acceptance, more than six weeks since you mailed a paper return, or Where’s My Refund tells you to call. The phone line shows the same information as the online tools, and hold times run long in February and March. Our tips on how to reach a real person at the IRS can save time.

Bank Alerts

Your bank can post a deposit before Where’s My Refund updates. Turn on deposit alerts in your banking app so you know the moment your refund lands. Waiting on a state refund too? Here’s how to check your state tax refund in all 50 states.

What If You File A Tax Extension In 2027?

An extension moves your filing deadline to Friday, October 15, 2027, but it doesn’t extend the time to pay. You still owe any balance by April 15, and our article on how to file a tax extension covers the steps. Refunds on extended returns follow the same 21-day pattern once the IRS accepts the return.

The extension calendar below picks up where the main calendar ends. If you’re owed money, there’s no penalty for filing late, but you generally have three years to claim a tax refund before the IRS keeps it.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Will I Get My Tax Refund In 2027?

Most e-filed returns with direct deposit get a refund within 21 days of IRS acceptance. If the IRS opens on January 25, 2027, the first deposits should arrive around February 5. Refunds with the EITC or ACTC should arrive around March 1 or 2, 2027.

When Does The IRS Start Accepting Tax Returns In 2027?

The IRS hasn’t announced it yet, but we expect Monday, January 25, 2027. That’s the Monday after MLK Day and the last Monday of January, the two patterns the IRS has followed since 2022. Our page on when IRS e-file opens will post the official date.

Does Filing Early Get You A Faster Refund?

Only up to a point. IRS Free File opened on January 9 in 2026, but the IRS didn’t process any of those returns until the season opened, according to the IRS Free File announcement. Filing in the first week the IRS is open puts you at the front of the line, and most free tax software will hold your return until then.

How Do I Check My Tax Refund Status?

Use Where’s My Refund on IRS.gov or the IRS app. You’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status and exact refund amount. For a state refund, use your state’s refund status page.

What Does It Mean When Your Refund Is Pending?

A pending or Return Received status means the IRS has your return and is processing it. It changes to Refund Approved once the IRS sets a deposit date. If it stays put for more than 21 days after e-file acceptance, check for a letter or one of the IRS reference codes.

How Long Can The IRS Hold Your Refund?

The IRS can hold a refund as long as it needs to resolve a problem with your return. Most holds clear within a few weeks after the IRS gets what it asked for, such as identity verification. Our list of reasons your tax return could be delayed covers the common holds.

How Long Does A Mailed Tax Return Take?

Plan on six weeks or more for a paper return. Status shows in Where’s My Refund about four weeks after you mail it, and the IRS processes paper returns by hand. E-filing with direct deposit is faster, and our walkthrough on how to do your own taxes shows how.

What Does Tax Topic 152 Mean?

Tax Topic 152 means you’re getting a refund and the IRS is still processing your return. It’s general information, not a sign of a problem. Wait for the status to change to Refund Approved before expecting your tax refund.

What Does Tax Topic 151 Mean?

Tax Topic 151 means some or all of your refund may go to a past-due debt through an offset. You’ll get a letter that explains where the money went. Our steps to stop a tax offset explain how to dispute or prevent one.

Share Your 2027 Refund Date

The best real-time refund data comes from readers. When your refund lands, leave a comment with your acceptance date, whether you claimed the EITC or ACTC and the day the deposit hit. Other readers use those reports to check the calendar, and they help us spot delays early. Questions about a code or a letter? Our Where’s My Refund answers are the best place to start.

Editor’s Note: This article is updated throughout tax season as the IRS releases new information. Dates are estimates based on prior IRS refund cycles, IRS announcements and refund dates readers report.
