After sitting out 2025, Hathaway has returned in 2026 with five movies: Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street, and Verity. All five movies are from different genres: an A24 pyschological drama, a sequel to a beloved adaptation, a Christopher Nolan epic, an original sci-fi blockbuster, and an erotic thriller.

Hathaway’s first movie, Mother Mary, is about Hathaway playing the titular pop star who reunites with her former lover and collaborator days before her comeback performance. While the movie flopped at the box office, Hathaway received positive reviews for her performance.

Hathaway then kicked off the summer with The Devil Wears Prada 2, where she reprised her role as Andy Sachs. The sequel overperformed with a worldwide gross of $691 million.

Hathaway is currently starring in The Odyssey, which is in the running for the movie event of the year. The film has already become Nolan’s highest-grossing movie of all time, and Hathaway will be an Oscar contender for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress, depending on which category the studio runs her in.

Hathaway’s final two movies could not be more different. The End of Oak Street is a dinosaur movie, while Verity is a Colleen Hoover adaptation of an erotic thriller.

Hathaway is following the movie-star playbook to a T. Frankly, it’s what I want to see out of movie stars. You do not have to join multiple franchises or refuse to play supporting roles to be a movie star. It’s all about balance.

Hathaway does a little bit of everything. She’ll work on auteur-driven projects from Nolan and David Lowery. She has no problems doing legacy sequels to characters she played 20 years ago. Hathaway will take a risk on a dinosaur movie that might fail because it’s not from the Jurassic Park franchise. To cap it all off, Hathaway will embrace the melodrama of the Colleen Hoover universe and star in a movie that will certainly be divisive.

There are many formulas to becoming a movie star. I prefer the ones implemented by Hathaway and her Odyssey co-star, Robert Pattinson. These are fearless actors who use their powers for good. They can get smaller projects made with emerging filmmakers based on their name. They’ll also star in Batman movies. This is the way to an interesting and successful career.

Here’s to more risks from Hathaway in the future.
