The freedom of Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) in Coronation Street could very well be down to Kit Green (Jacob Roberts). Unfortunately, Kit’s got problems of his own.
The Cobbles copper has had his life turned upside down by a breast cancer diagnosis, after the revelation that his entire family could carry the BRCA gene.
As secrets often do in Soap land, Kit’s medical news has trickled out gradually. Originally, he only confided in Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), as he was still in too much shock to tell his mum and siblings.
It was only after an appointment with a consultant that Kit felt ready to open up to his mum Bernie Winter-Alahan (Jane Hazlegrove) about his ordeal, as well as his colleague DS Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers).
Like anyone struggling with cancer, Kit is trying to take life day by day and do his best to avoid stress.
Stress for instance… like an impending murder trial.
Unluckily for Kit, his ex-girlfriend Sarah is currently in a prison cell for the murder of Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), Todd Grimshaw’s monstrously abusive husband.
Understandably, Kit’s relationship with Sarah couldn’t survive the reveal that she pushed Theo off the rooftop to his death, sought the help of her ex-boyfriend Gary Windass (Mikey North) to cover it up.
Now Sarah’s entire future hangs on one question – did she kill Theo in self defence, or did she murder him in anger?
With Kit being a key part of the investigation, Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) is obviously very keen for Kit to testify in court and help her mum avoid a huge prison sentence. This puts Kit in an awkward position… particularly as he and Bethany slept together.
In upcoming episodes of Coronation Street, Kit feels the pressure with the trial looming and reveals his cancer diagnosis. But will it change anything?
When Sarah asks Kit to act as a character reference for her, he refuses. It’s not until Bethany confronts him and tries to persuade him to reconsider when Kit finally reveals he has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. What will Bethany say?
Kit prepares for his first chemotherapy session as Brody (Ryan Mulvey) arrives to see him. Kit puts on a brave face, plugs in his electric razor and lets Brody shave his hair for him.
At the hospital, Kit finds support with Bernie through talking about stories of his childhood. Later at home, Brody calls and tells Kit he needs him more than ever and to keep fighting as Kit hugs him tight.
Meanwhile, Bethany and Todd visit Sarah in prison. When a defeated Sarah tells them she understands Kit’s decision not to help her, Todd blurts out that Kit’s got breast cancer.
Bethany’s horrified whilst Sarah reels in shock.
Bethany begs Sarah to let Gary carry the can for Theo’s murder, pointing out that she needs her, Kit needs her and Harry needs her. Sarah’s torn. What will Sarah do?
