Adam Sandler’s latest production has wasted little time finding an audience on Netflix. The coming-of-age drama is dominating the streamer’s U.S. movie chart, giving Adam’s daughter, Sunny Sandler, a major early spotlight and putting Happy Madison’s latest project firmly in the streaming conversation.
Don’t Say Good Luck, produced by Adam Sandler, looks to be a big Netflix hit
As per Flix Patrol, Don’t Say Good Luck currently sits at No. 1 on Netflix’s U.S. Top 10, ahead of The Dating App Killer: The Monica White Story, The Last House, Arthur the King, A Child of My Own, and 72 Hours. Netflix released the movie on August 14, and its immediate chart success gives the Sandler family another streaming win.
The movie puts 17-year-old Sunny Sandler in the lead as Sophie Birenbaum, a teenager who lands the starring role in her school production of Waitress. Her excitement collides with a painful family crisis as her mother, played by Melanie Lynskey, battles cancer. The story draws from writer Laura Hankin’s own experience with a similar situation.
Adam Sandler produced the project through Happy Madison, but he does not appear on screen. The same is true for Sunny’s mother, Jackie Sandler, and sister Sadie. Instead, Sunny carries the movie with a cast that includes Max Greenfield, Steve Buscemi, Bebe Neuwirth, Stephanie Beatriz, Jon Lovitz, Scarlett Estevez, and Jack Champion. Julia Hart directed from a script penned by Hart, Hankin, and Jordan Horowitz.
The early critical response has also given the movie some momentum. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists a 94% Tomatometer score. As for the general audience, they have awarded it a fairly impressive 84% score. On IMDb, the movie boasts a decent 6.8 score.
Critics and fans have connected with the movie’s genuine emotional pull, but the real heart of the story is Sophie’s relationship with her mother, who is battling cancer. Their bond gives the film plenty of emotional weight, turning what could have been a simple family story into something far more personal.
