Alia Shawkat drew the spotlight in fall 2019 when she and Brad Pitt were out together repeatedly over four months. They showed up together at an art show, a Ye concert, and at In-N-Out.

Almost seven years on, the subject was back in conversation. When Shawkat appeared on Watch What Happens Live Sunday to talk about The Wrong Girls with Kristen Stewart, Andy Cohen jumped right in with questions.

When Cohen asked for details on the rumors, Shawkat replied, “This is my favorite question to get asked.” She went on to reveal that they “became friends” after meeting through their mutual friend and director, Spike Jonze.

“It sounds all very chic and Hollywood,” she added. “But we met, and he’s really into art, and he’s very cool, and we became friends. And everyone thought we were dating, because if you stand next to him, everyone thinks you’re dating. Like, even his own mother.” Shawkat, however, added that the tabloids pairing her with Pitt gave her “cred” and an A-list friend.

Previously, in November 2019, reporters questioned Brad Pitt about the dating rumors. That was after people had seen him and Shawkat together at the L.A. on Fire art show. “I don’t know how many women they’ve said I’ve been dating the last two or three years,” he told The New York Times, “and none of it’s true.”
