A recent poll has ranked 2007’s “Zodiac” as acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher’s best work, and it’s not even close.
Conducted by World of Reel, the site gathered 118 ballots from critics, programmers, filmmakers, and scholars – myself included.
Each of us was asked to submit a single title that they believed to be the best of Fincher’s filmography, one which spans twelve films so far, with the thirteenth – “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” – arriving this Fall.
My vote was for “Zodiac,” which ended up being the clear winner – the title snagging 51 votes. Second through fourth was a tight race between “Fight Club” (23), “The Social Network” (21) and “Se7en” (17).
Another four ended up getting votes in the low single digits (“Gone Girl,” “The Game,” “Alien 3,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), while four films didn’t get any votes at all (“Panic Room,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Mank,” “The Killer”).
Appreciation for “Zodiac” has gone up considerably in the nearly 20 years since its release as people came to appreciate that this wasn’t another “Se7en” built on shock. It’s a much quieter film about the investigation itself and obsession, revelling in both details and a pervasive sense of dread. The elusiveness of concrete answers isn’t a bug, it’s a feature.
