Few things in life are as terrifying as the wilderness. Sure, travel bloggers can make your average person see the forest as a beautiful adventure just waiting to happen, but real survivalists recognize that nothing is scarier than being left alone in nature with nothing to rely on but your own sanity. Many folk horrorfilms twist the natural world to its scariest potential, but few do it with as much grim social awareness as Ben Wheatley'sIn The Earth. Now streaming on Tubi, the movie follows a pair of explorers looking for a lost researcher, and pairs its creepy woodsmen and bloodthirsty mushrooms with the residual trauma so many watchers have left over from the Covid-19 pandemic. It somehow turns the expansive forest into something stifling, drawing on both haunting medical imagery and the shockingly common ways someone can be brutalized in nature, to create a multi-faceted new terror for this subgenre. It's an ingenious, disturbing innovation, and it's unfortunate how many people are still missing out on it.
