William H. Macy on How He Avoids Playing the Same Character in Every Movie He’s Cast In

William H. Macy has explained how he keeps his roles from feeling too similar from one movie to the next. The acclaimed actor recently reflected on his approach to taking on varied characters in an interview.

Speaking with ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese, Macy was asked about moving between broad comedy, such as Ricky Stanicky, and more dramatic work, Train Dreams.

The Oscar-nominee said he considers himself a character who is drawn to stories and strong writing. “I’m particularly attracted to good writing. And good writing, to me, is close to music. It’s got a rhythm. It’s got meter,” the 76-year-old said.

Macy also admitted that wild transitions can backfire, revealing that he has fallen for it before. “It’s very show-offy to go from character to character and make them look different and make them wildly different, which is a trap, actually,” he said.

The Shameless star said he no longer forces a new look for every role. “If I look exactly like I did in a film before, well, so be it. It’s still me,” he said.

Macy has built a substantial career across both film and TV. His breakout role came from the Coen Brothers’ Fargo in 1996, where he played Jerry Lundegaard and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

He is also best known as Frank Gallagher in Shameless, which ran from 2011 to 2021. Another notable TV show in which Macy starred is the medical drama ER, where he played Dr. David Morgenstern.

His other film credits include Boogie Nights, Air Force One, Magnolia, Jurassic Park III, The Cooler, Door to Door, and Seabiscuit, among others.

Macy was also seen in Speed Demon, which premiered in theaters in May 2026. The 76-year-old has played Chief Kreuger recently in The Deputy, which was released in select theaters and on digital platforms on September 25, 2026.
