Robinson believes the creatures originate from deep within the ocean. “I’ve always loved the idea that so much of our Earth is completely unexplored,” he said. He also questioned why humanity focuses on Mars when the ocean remains largely unknown. The film’s opening Arthur C. Clarke quote further supports this oceanic origin theory.

The creatures sealed every home shut and roamed outside for five years without entering. Robinson offered two possible explanations for their eventual intrusion into the Delgado house. “Nobody should have survived,” he said, suggesting curiosity drove them inside. He then pivoted, proposing they may have returned to finish an incomplete extermination job.

The family fights back using improvised weapons but ultimately chooses mercy over violence. They free a trapped creature from its restraints instead of killing it. The creature then appears to communicate with the others outside the house. “By the Delgados granting them peace and understanding, I think they wanted to reciprocate that,” Robinson explained. He described the conflict as two frightened species wrongly assuming the worst about each other.

The rain stops after this moment of empathy between the family and creatures. The creatures jump into the hole left by the collapsing house and vanish completely. Robinson acknowledged the ending remains deliberately ambiguous despite its hopeful tone. “The future is completely unknown,” he said. “They don’t know what’s over the next wave, but they’re together and they’re going to find a way.”
