Wondering if Mission: Impossible 9 is happening after The Final Reckoning? Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt survives the franchise’s latest high-stakes chapter, but with the Entity neutralized and key characters gone, fans are questioning what comes next. Despite being billed as a finale, the ending leaves the door slightly ajar.
Here’s what we know about a potential ninth film and the future of the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Why Mission: Impossible 9 possibly won’t happen?
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and written by McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning concludes with Ethan Hunt defeating the AI threat known as The Entity. Hunt traps it in a five-dimensional device, becoming the only person with access to it. Although Gabriel (Esai Morales) dies and the world is saved, Ethan survives and does not retire.
There is no official confirmation of Mission: Impossible 9 or any future installments. Cruise told Empire, “You gotta see the movie. It’s a hard thing for me to discuss at the moment, because it really is something that you have to experience.”
On the red carpet, he said, “It’s the final! It’s not called ‘final’ for nothing” (via The Hollywood Reporter). However, McQuarrie stated in 2023, “There’s always a plan, the plan always changes… everything always turns out alright in the end” (via Entertainment Weekly.)
Cruise has expressed interest in continuing the franchise, saying he wants to play Ethan Hunt as long as audiences are interested. In The Final Reckoning, Luther’s last message to Ethan says, “The world still needs you,” implying future possibilities.
The franchise has historically operated on irregular schedules. Between releases, gaps have ranged from three to five years. While Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning were shot back-to-back, future films have not been announced.
Box office performance might influence the decision. Dead Reckoning earned $571 million on a $291 million budget. The Final Reckoning cost over $400M and opened with $190M globally, including a franchise-best $77M domestic debut. It likely needs $1B to break even.
If Cruise approves, another film is possible. Otherwise, Paramount may consider reboots or spin-offs in the long term.
