Why Godzilla Minus Zero’s Director Accepted an R Rating

Godzilla Minus Zero is making a bold choice before reaching theaters. It will carry the first R rating in the 72-year history of the Godzilla franchise. For director Takashi Yamazaki, however, the restriction mattered less than protecting scenes he considered vital to the sequel.

The MPA gave the movie its R rating for “violent content/bloody images,” meaning viewers younger than 17 need a parent or guardian to attend. Yamazaki acknowledged that a PG-13 release would have opened the door to a wider audience, but he told Variety that some material could not survive cuts. “Censoring it or cutting it was just not an option for me,” he said.

That stance puts Godzilla Minus Zero on a different path from the franchise’s previous installments. The rating has historically carried a commercial concern for major studio movies, but recent hits have weakened that stigma. Deadpool earned $782 million in 2016, while Joker crossed $1 billion in 2019. Deadpool & Wolverine later reached $1.33 billion, and The Odyssey has since climbed to $1.72 billion.

Yamazaki also sees a possible upside in the rating. Rather than treating an R as an automatic warning sign, he believes modern audiences can view it as proof that filmmakers did not hold back. He said that approach can create “expectation and excitement” because viewers know the director and cast retained their creative voice. The filmmaker hopes Minus Zero can follow that path.

Festival director Dennis Lim even joked that it was time for the event to embrace a giant-monster movie. Yamazaki received loud applause before and after the screening and asked attendees to keep the details off social media. “No spoilers, please! I am trusting all of you guys,” he requested.

The filmmaker also revealed that he never planned a follow-up to Godzilla Minus One. Toho executives began asking about a sequel after watching the first cut. The director changed his mind after the 2023 film found worldwide audience acclaim.
