Iman Shumpert’s character, Rob Lafayette, didn’t just leave; he was gunned down in the Season 6 finale of The Chi, and fans didn’t see it coming. After four seasons of steady character growth, solid relationships, and staying mostly level-headed, Rob’s death hit hard. So what led to this end? And why did the writers choose to kill him off now?
Here’s a detailed explainer.
Why did Iman Shumpert’s Rob leave and die in The Chi Season 6?
Rob first appeared as one of Tiffany’s cannabis clients in Season 4, but their relationship quickly became more than that. They moved in together, weathered ups and downs, and built something real. Rob stood out for his calm demeanor. He didn’t raise his voice or get pulled into drama. But staying low-key wasn’t enough to shield him from the dangers of the South Side.
In Season 6, Rob made a dangerous step by going against Douda, a powerful man with political influence and a criminal empire. Rob tried to set him up, but the plan failed, and Douda retaliated. Rob ended up in a coma after being shot, surviving the first hit but not the second.
Douda wasn’t the only threat. Nuck, another player in South Side’s criminal scene, wanted a stake in Rob and Tiffany’s legal weed business. Rob said no, and Nuck responded with blood. In the finale, he killed Douda to seize control, then murdered Rob too, just to send a message to Rob’s mother, Alicia. He left Rob’s body on her doorstep.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in July 2024, The Chi’s co-showrunner Justin Hillian explained the reason behind killing off Rob. “Ultimately, we always defer to the story. And we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. But we wanted to be able to leave season six with this.”
He further added, “When you lose an energy like Douda, we wanted to leave off with Nuck, who is taking the reins, and then Alicia, who has had this loss. We wanted to have those two things happening as we move into season seven.”
