James Gunn, the writer-director of Superman and co-head of the DCU, explained in a new interview why David Corenswet‘s version of the iconic superhero retained the character’s red trunks, while Henry Cavill’s iteration in the DCEU didn’t. Notably, the red trunks debuted in 1938 as part of Superman’s costume in Action Comics #1, which also marked Superman’s first appearance in the comics.
James Gunn explains the reason for Superman’s trunks in DCU movie
Gunn spoke at length on why Superman in his movie wore the red trunks and why Zack Snyder decided to leave it out in the DCEU. When asked what Gunn pictured the Superman suit to look like on the first day, and how it compared to the finished version during an interview with Fandango, the filmmaker responded that he knew that he didn’t want it to look like a “wet t-shirt” and didn’t want to have muscles built into it.
Gunn divulged that he worked closely with costume designer Judianna Makovsky, whom he had previously collaborated with on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, to ensure that they created a world where metahumans existed and wore uniforms for various reasons.
Gunn noted that one of the biggest questions in the process of figuring out Superman’s costume was whether to retain the red trunks. He said that he spoke to Zack Snyder, who told him that he tried “a billion different versions with the trunks,” but it didn’t ultimately work for him. Gunn admitted that he was feeling exactly the same way.
He spoke to Makovsky, who suggested that they should try one version of the costume with the trunks and one without. They brought in Corenswet to try them on, and even then, Gunn thought going without trunks would be better, despite liking the idea in theory. According to the filmmaker, this was when Corenswet’s opinion on the subject influenced his decision.
As per Corenswet, while the trunks looked “silly,” that might be the point of them. He added that trunks were there to “undermine how powerful he really is.”
This prompted Gunn to elaborate, “In this version of the DCU, everyone knows he’s an alien. He shoots beams out of his eyes. He can blow things down with his breath. He’s sort of this terrifying creature.” Gunn mentioned that Corenswet pointed out that Superman loved children and humanity, and he wanted them not to be afraid of him. “And that was the thing that made me decide to keep the trunks,” Gunn said.
