After Scott Mills’ sudden firing, speculation over who will take over his radio and hosting duties has already started.
This morning, it was revealed that the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show presenter was let go over his ‘personal conduct.’
The allegation ‘relates to a historic relationship dating back more than 10 years,’ according to The Mirror.
It’s understood that Mills will not be involved in any of his upcoming BBC projects, from his popular morning radio show to Eurovision coverage.
Favourite to take over on Radio 2 is presenter Vernon Kay, according to bookies William Hill, with 6/4 odds.
Kay, 51, is no stranger to the station and currently hosts the mid-morning show, having taken over from Ken Bruce in 2023.
Not far behind is Gary Davies at 5/2, who stepped in for Mills this week and is best known as a regular presenter of Top of the Pops.
He’s become the go-to stand-in across Radio 2 after returning to the air in 2018 with Sounds of the 80s, which is live every Saturday night.
Davies, 68, took Mills’ usual slot this morning, merely saying he would be ‘in for Scott until Thursday this week’ without revealing any other details.
Fellow disc jockey OJ Borg is next at 11/4. He’s currently hosting the overnight show, which runs from 12am to 3am, so the breakfast slot would be a lie-in.
Lee Philips, a spokesperson for William Hill, shared: ‘With Scott Mills’ departure from BBC Radio 2 confirmed, attention has quickly turned to who takes on one of the biggest roles in UK radio.
‘Our early betting has Vernon Kay out in front at 6/4, but right behind him is Gary Davies at 5/2 and OJ Borg at 11/4, having previously hosted the show.’
They added: ‘Other potential candidates include Rylan Clark (7/2), Clara Amfo (4/1) and Tony Blackburn (6/1), followed by Strictly Come Dancing and Traitors presenter Claudia Winkleman (8/1).’
Mills was set to return to Eurovision this year alongside Rylan, having been a commentator for the semi-finals previously.
The pair also have a podcast, Pop Top 10, which the BBC recently announced would be returning for another series, the future of which is now unknown.
Also in the mix are comedian Joe Wilkinson at 10/1 and Taskmaster star Alex Horne at 20/1 to replace him ‘on one of the flagship BBC Radio shows.’
Details have not been revealed about why Mills was let go from the BBC, with which he has an almost 30-year history.
A statement from the BBC said: ‘While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.’
Mills is yet to make a statement in response to his exit.
