The backstory behind a famous line in WandaVision, where Vision talks about “love persevering” has been revealed. In a recent interview, while highlighting its impact, Paul Bettany revealed that a lot of work went into coming up with it.

Notably, it emphasizes the emotional journey Wanda Maximoff goes through in the show, in which she copes with the losses she has sustained in her life by creating an alternate reality that ensures her happiness.

Paul Bettany reveals who really came up with WandaVision’s famous line

On Happy, Sad, Confused with Josh Horowitz, Bettany shared that the line in a crucial scene of WandaVision, where Vision tells Wanda, “What is grief, if not love persevering?” was not improvised, unlike other iconic lines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He added that a lot of people contributed to its conception.

The English actor recalled that they frequently found themselves close to coming up with it. However, he said that they struggled to complete it due to a missing piece.

“And they kept going back, and then it was Jac [Schaeffer]’s assistant came in with the coffees, and she went ‘persevering,'” he further recounted. “And we all went, ‘that’s it!'” The Amadeus star pointed out that the line has found a life of its own since then.

Bettany shared that one of the great things about the scene was that it wasn’t “played on” himself but on Elizabeth Olsen. “Look, it’s a great line,” he continued. “But what makes it really moving is seeing it land with her.”

The actor later touched upon the line’s enduring impact and how its meaning resonated with fans. He recalled that whenever he would go to conventions, he would meet people who would bring up the line.

“I’ve seen people with tattoos of it,” he added. “It’s a lovely thought, it’s very well wrought line.” He concluded by calling it “a well-written line.” Bettany further pointed out how the cameras were on Olsen, who he said did all the acting. He quipped while chuckling, “I get all the credit.”

WandaVision is streaming on Disney+. It is the first installment of a trilogy that continues with Agatha All Along (2024) and wraps up with VisionQuest.
