VisionQuest is earning praise for its queer representation. The TV miniseries breakout star has explained how this creative decision holds personal significance to him.
Ruaridh Mollica, who plays Tommy Maximoff in VisionQuest, recently spoke with Variety about the role. The actor discussed one aspect of the character he personally related to most strongly.
Mollica identifies as bisexual, a trait he shares with his VisionQuest character. The 27-year-old praised Marvel for casting a queer actor for the role and emphasized the significance of the representation in the MCU.
“I feel like Marvel did a great job by casting a bisexual actor for this and it’s such an honor to be portraying that in the MCU,” he shared, adding, “I feel so seen.”
Talking about his onscreen sibling Joe Locke, who is gay, Mollica rejoiced, “These queer twin brothers in the MCU together … it’s so cool.” Locke plays Tommy’s younger brother Billy Maximoff.
Why VisionQuest star Mollica feels seen by Marvel’s bisexual representation
During the interview, Ruarish Mollica also explained that the show had multiple discussions about not showing Tommy being attracted to other men.
“He’s flirting with Lisa Molinari, but I think that makes me feel more seen as bisexual,” Mollica explained. “Because that’s the whole point. It’s not necessarily about who you’re dating. It’s about who you are inside, and who you want to flirt with. So I hope that me being bisexual and playing this part is good for people to feel seen and represented.”
Created by Terry Matalas, VisionQuest is a spin-off of the 2021 miniseries WandaVision. It follows the titular synthezoid as he tries to understand who he is by communicating with the other AIs in his system. Meanwhile, a mysterious young man enters his life and could be his reincarnated son.
Paul Bettany reprises his role as Vision while James Spader returns as Ultron. Other cast members include Mollica, Todd Stashwick, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, and more.
