Verity: Josh Harnett Explains How Anne Hathaway Steals Key Scene Despite Being Unconscious

Anne Hathaway managed to steal a scene in Verity without saying a word. Josh Hartnett recently opened up about filming the psychological thriller with Hathaway and explained how a small movement from Hathaway made the scene more dramatic.

Hartnett said he had to carry Hathaway outside a house while her character was supposed to remain completely still. However, her arm suddenly dropped, followed by her head. Hartnett said, “It was so dramatic.” He then jokingly asked, “Annie, did you just steal the scene when you’re supposed to be unconscious?” Hathaway replied, “Maybe?” Her response made Hartnett laugh.

The moment occurred while Hartnett and Hathaway were filming their first scene together. Hartnett plays Jeremy Crawford, while Hathaway portrays his wife, Verity. Their characters are at the center of the story, which also follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer played by Dakota Johnson.

Hartnett also opened up about Hathaway’s approach to the role. He called her “one of the most professional actors” he has worked with. Hartnett praised the clarity with which she understands her characters. He said, “She’s very cerebral.”

Josh explained that he finds it comforting to work with someone who has “a really clear idea of what they want to create with the character.” However, he added that Hathaway also enjoys having fun and playing around during filming.

Hartnett said the unexpected movement during the scene showed that side of Hathaway’s performance. He described her as “a wily performer” and said he loved that quality about her.

Verity is based on Colleen Hoover‘s bestselling novel of the same name. The story follows Lowen as she moves into the Crawford home to finish Verity’s unfinished books. While there, she discovers disturbing writings that raise questions about Verity, Jeremy, and their family’s history.

Michael Showalter directed the film, which also stars Ismael Cruz Córdova and Chase Infiniti. Verity will release in theaters on October 2, 2026.
