Verity‘s new trailer has fans excited, but one detail is causing concern among viewers. The Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson-led thriller has impressed viewers with its dark and unsettling tone. However, one particular aspect of the movie is bothering fans, leaving them worried.

Amazon MGM Studios recently released the trailer for the upcoming mystery thriller Verity. Hathaway and Johnson will play Verity Crawford and Lowen Ashleigh, respectively. The trailer highlights elements of horror and psychological drama through the stars’ performances. However, despite the impressive trailer, fans appear divided over Colleen Hoover’s involvement.

@new_year_babe stated on X (formerly Twitter), “No thanks. I’ll be sitting this one out. Colleen Hoover’s actions behind the scenes on her other film changed how I feel about supporting her work.” @TVMovieAddict wrote, “I’m passing on anything that has to do with Colleen Hoover.” @aice101010 commented, “There’s a thin line between exploring a woman’s darkness and packaging it as entertainment. This trailer already feels like it’s choosing the latter.” @vladoku chimed in, saying, “Colleen Hoover readers are either going to love this or completely lose their minds.”

Why Colleen Hoover’s involvement in Verity is making some fans nervous

Although Hoover’s book is a New York Times bestseller and has an impressive 4.29-star rating on Goodreads, fans are divided over the film’s fate. This might be because previous books by Hoover that were adapted into movies did not perform very well.

The 2024 movie It Ends with Us received mixed reviews from critics. Although it did great at the box office, grossing nearly $349 million, the film failed to win over the critics. The Blake Lively-led romantic drama currently has a 55% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The other two film adaptations from Hoover’s book also didn’t live up to the expectations of the critics. Regretting You and Reminders of Him have poor 28% and 56% Tomatometer scores, respectively. Unlike It Ends with Us, the latter two films didn’t really perform well at the box office as well, grossing just about $90 million and $89 million worldwide. These mixed critical reviews have led some fans to worry that Verity could receive a similar reception.

Verity is set to hit the theaters on October 2, 2026.
