Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson) is coming off a quieter period in Emmerdale.
Arriving back in 2022 as a razor-sharp former journalist and mum of Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), with whom she shared an incredibly fractious relationship with at the time, until Mark Charnock’s (Marlon Dingle) stroke saw Mary step up and support her daughter through the incredibly difficult ordeal.
An unlikely friendship with famously friend-averse Kim Tate (Claire King) came next, and it was this friendship that saw Mary courageously come out to the Lady of Home Farm and begin to live her truth as a gay woman, something Rhona initially struggled with prior to accepting her mum.
Venturing out into the world of dating for the first time as an openly gay woman, Mary unfortunately attracted the attention of Faye Helders (Jane Gurnett), a repugnant scam artist who stole money from Mary, assaulted her and later leaked intimate photos.
She next found herself in a classic, soapy love triangle with Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough) and Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick), before taking a break from the village after Suzy’s death, returning at the tail end of her families secret torture at the hands of big-time criminals Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) and Ray Walters (Joe Absolom), who Rhona desperately tried to shield her from.
Since then, Mary has managed to stay out of the eye of the storm, though Louise has promised that’s all about to change, and she’s about to become embroiled in a big storyline!
‘All I can tell you is that they’ve asked for a week’s holiday back at Christmas – so I’ve definitely got something coming up!’ she teased while speaking to Digital Spy at the Inside Soap awards.
‘There’s a pretty dramatic year coming up, but I’m under strict instructions not to say any more, it wouldn’t have been what I’d have written for her at all, and I’m learning a lot through the little clues that they’ve given me. I’ve had to do some research on it, so watch this space!’
Louise went on to discuss her last story, that saw her play a part after the big reveal of the full scope of Celia’s criminal empire, while also teasing that her upcoming story will see the family rally around her.
‘In a way, a story for one of us is a story for all of us. That’s what our family – our little bubble – represents: we’ve got three kids, Mary’s got a daughter and a son-in-law and I think that’s why she was so furious to be thrown out, I was thrown out of the house! She just didn’t feel part of the unit any more, but all that’s changed and we’re all back friendly again, so it’s definitely going to be a family story.’
Louise confirmed to The Mirror earlier this year that she’ll be sticking around the Yorkshire Dales for a while longer yet, having signed another contract for a further year on the show.
‘I’m really thrilled. It’s so corny to say this, but I feel like it’s some sort of gift from the universe to me, and that’s because I’m not in every day, I have a regular wage, it’s high profile, the company is extraordinary, Zoe Henry who plays daughter is such a joy to be around, it couldn’t be better.
‘The only downside is that it’s a five-hour commute, I have to drive up from Kent, but that’s a small price to pay for such a wonderful job – I spend half time out on the Yorkshire moors!
‘I don’t do that commute each day, if my story is heavy I will stay up there. I have some lovely digs up there, one of the makeup women has a granny annex so I put my head down there, it’s lovely.’
