A Coronation Street couple look set to split after their relationship hit an enormous obstacle in recent scenes.
Tensions have been high between Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) for several months, with things only getting worse after the death of Julie Carp.
On the day of Julie’s death, George found a video she recorded for Eileen encouraging her to break up with him as he clearly wasn’t making her happy.
Since then, George has been trying his best to improve things with Eileen, though his efforts have proved too overbearing for the grieving woman.
In tonight’s episode, his efforts to strengthen their relationship backfired even further.

At Julie’s wake, George saw an opportunity during her dream game to ask Eileen to marry him, much to her shock.
There was an awkward moment of silence before their attention was drawn to Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas), who had made a surprise return to the UK after being dumped by his girlfriend.
After greeting him, George pointed out to Eileen that he was still waiting for an answer to his question.
However, he was left crushed when she admitted that she thought he had been joking.
Later, when everything became too much for Eileen, she headed home, where George soon found her.

He explained that he just wanted to give her a wedding to look forward to amid her grief, but that he understood his timing had been bad.
As he promised to leave the subject alone for now and ask her again later down the line, Eileen admitted that it wasn’t the timing that was the problem, but the fact that she didn’t want to marry him.
She insisted that he was a great guy and she didn’t want to hurt him, and that she was sorry she didn’t feel the same.
With Eileen soon set to leave the cobbles behind following actress Sue Cleaver’s exit from the ITV soap, are things over between George and Eileen, or will they find a way to make things work?
