Tracee Ellis Ross recently reflected on what she views as a lack of recognition for her show, Girlfriends. She added that she was never invited to any talk shows, including those hosted by Jay Leno and David Letterman. She felt “confused” whenever someone associated with even a quarter of the show’s viewership made it on air while they didn’t, questioning whether racism was involved.
Tracee Ellis Ross has a blunt question about ‘Girlfriends’ late-night snubs
In a conversation with What Now? With Trevor Noah, Ross opened up about the Girlfriends snub from late-night shows. “I remember watching Girlfriends going, ‘The comedy, the situation, the elements of the story, what is being defined here.’ That, to me, was revolutionary, but it was never credited with the revolution, which was weird to me,” she said.
She pointed out how the show received recognition after it ended, but not during its run. She stated that the show was not properly recognized by late-night shows or the Emmys. Notably, the series was only nominated once at the Emmys in its entire run in the Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series category.
Ross further revealed that Leno had shown intent to invite her on his show, but even he didn’t acknowledge Girlfriends. “It was Jay Leno. And I had Girlfriends, and the comment was, ‘We love Tracee. Call us when she gets something. I remember thinking, ‘Get what? What else do you have to get?’ I don’t know. And it just was… ‘We love her,’ but it was not considered.”
She said that she didn’t understand why their show was snubbed from his show after seeing another with less viewership being recognized. This left her confused about whether the snub had something to do with viewership or racism.
This 2000 sitcom centered on four school friends, now turned adults, who reunite and deal with their personal problems.
