One of the top prospects in baseball will begin the season in the majors.

Shortstop JJ Wetherholt will be on the Opening Day roster for the St. Louis Cardinals, team president Chaim Bloom announced on Monday.

Wetherholt, 23, is the No. 5 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline and was the No. 7 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He had two home runs, seven RBIs and a .780 OPS in 15 spring training games.

Wetherholt turned pro in 2024 but reached as high as triple-A in 2025. In 109 games last season split between double-A and triple-A, he hit .306/.421/.510 with a .931 OPS, 17 home runs and 23 stolen bases.

The Cardinals are in a rebuilding year after a major sell-off over the off-season. The club traded away veterans Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray and Brendan Donovan after missing the playoffs for a third straight year in 2025.
