Timberwolves’ Edwards out at least one week with right knee inflammation

The Minnesota Timberwolves will be without their superstar for at least a week.

Anthony Edwards is dealing with right knee inflammation and will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks, the team announced Tuesday.

It’s a big loss for a Timberwolves team that is jockeying for playoff positioning in the Western Conference.

Edwards, 24, is averaging 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game this season.

The Georgia product is the third-leading scorer in the NBA, behind only Luka Doncic (32.9 points per game) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (31.6).

Edwards has already missed 10 games this season, so if he misses a full two weeks, he could be in jeopardy of falling below the 65-game threshold to be considered for league awards.

The Timberwolves enter Tuesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns sixth in the Western Conference with a 41-27 record. They are just two games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for third, but also just two games ahead of the seventh-place Suns.

Only the top six teams in each conference are guaranteed a playoff spot, while seventh through 10th place must earn a spot through the play-in tournament.
