Project Hail Mary, the stunning new sci-fi drama from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has been rightly praised for its warmth, humor, and optimism. The film’s secret weapon, however, is Sandra Hüller, who plays Hail Mary project leader Eva Stratt. Whereas Ryan Gosling’s lead is jovial, clumsy, and endearing, Stratt is the counterbalance as his sober superior. Throughout flashbacks in the film, we see more of Eva’s personality shine through, as we see the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. It's a remarkable performance from an actor in her first major Hollywood movie, and those looking for more from the star need only go back a few years to 2023’s Oscar-nominated drama, Anatomy of a Fall. Filled with raw emotion and mystery, Hüller underpins one of the most fascinating films of the decade.
