Before going on to helm Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, director J.A. Bayona delivered an unheralded coming-of-age classic in A Monster Calls. Adapted by writer Patrick Ness from his own 2011 young adult fantasy novel, the film went by relatively unnoticed at the box office, grossing only $47.2 million against a $43 million production budget, with the U.S. and Canada only accounting for $3.7 million. Yet, its underwhelming financial performance came in contrast to an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and an 81% mark from audiences, as viewers who actually saw it were impressed by the moving story and darker themes with a fantasy edge that helped it stand out from other coming-of-age stories. Starting September 1, Prime Video subscribers will now get a chance to check out this star-studded feature and see its merits for themselves.
