Jodie Whittaker, who became the first female protagonist of the Doctor Who franchise in 2018, seemingly wants to reprise her role in the sci-fi series at the first given opportunity. In a recent interview, the two-time Satellite Awards nominee opened up about her unexpected return as the Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who Season 15 before stating that she would love to take up a similar chance again.
Jodie Whittaker ‘wouldn’t hesitate’ to return for Doctor Who
The Broadchurch star revealed that she is open to once again stepping into the shoes of Doctor Who should such an opportunity come her way.
Talking about her comeback as the time-travelling being in Season 15, Jodie Whittaker noted to The Times UK, “I was just delighted I still fitted in my costume. The second I got to Cardiff [the series’ central filming location], I felt like I was home, even though it’s a different studio, a different Tardis. It’s just my absolute happiness, Doctor Who.”
Whittaker then talked about making a second return to the beloved sci-fi franchise. She stated, “If someone said to me in 20 years, ‘I’ve written an episode and the Thirteenth comes back,’ I just wouldn’t hesitate. It’s absolute joy.”
The 43-year-old English actress made her debut in the Doctor Who series in 2018 as the first female iteration of the iconic character. However, her casting as the 13th Doctor garnered much backlash from a significant portion of the fanbase, with many not taking well to the change.
With controversies clouding her outing as the titular Doctor, Jodie Whittaker’s first Doctor Who season opened to abysmal reviews from fans. It recorded a 20% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Addressing the mixed reaction that her casting received, Whittaker noted, “There needed to be a first, and I didn’t fully appreciate it. I’m not like Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot: ‘I’m a girl, I’m a girl!’ I just am. But once it was announced — as well as a few grumpy pumps — for a lot of people it felt like a really wonderful moment.”
It remains unclear if Jodie Whittaker will ever portray Doctor Who on the small screen. However, she is currently headlining an audio drama series titled Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures.
