Every year, it seems like we’re inundated with even more entertainment that is based primarily on nostalgia. Stranger Thingswouldn’t have existed without an absurd amount of love and references to the 1980s. One of the biggest films of last year, A Minecraft Movie, mostly served as a series of reminders of why people love that game. The new Harry Potter series looks like the movies we already had, and my god, we’re going to get new Jurassic Park and Star Wars movies that remind us why we liked the originals until we’re all dead and buried. Nostalgia is often a crutch to get viewers interested in something based on something they already like, an easy way to win over hearts and minds without really telling a story of substance.
