The Princess Diaries 3: Julie Andrews Confirms Heartbreaking Casting Update

Julie Andrews has shared a heartbreaking update about The Princess Diaries 3. The actress has stated that she will not be returning for the third installment of the franchise.

On August 10, 2026, the 90-year-old actress spoke with TODAY.com. Speaking about the upcoming movie, the veteran Hollywood star confirmed that she won’t reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries 3.

Andrews said, “I’m not going to be in it. I think the story is slightly different, and I’m not quite sure how they’re dealing with that. But it’s too late for me to do it. I think the story has to continue in Princess Mia. It’s her story. It’s not really mine.”

Such news will surely not make the fans happy. The 90-year-old actress was a beloved star who appeared in The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004).

Anne Hathaway’s Mia remains at the heart of the new Princess Diaries story

As Andrews mentioned, Anne Hathaway will remain the central character in the movie. Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis, who is initially portrayed as an ordinary girl from San Francisco. However, everything changes when Thermopolis discovers that she is a princess and the heir to the Genovian throne. In the first movie, Queen Clarisse plays an important role, teaching Mia how to behave and carry herself as a princess. However, Mia initially resists Clarisse’s lessons and wants to do things her own way.

In The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Mia discovers a Genovian law requiring the monarch to be married before ascending the throne. After falling in love with Nicholas Devereaux, played by Chris Pine, Mia successfully changes the law, allowing an unmarried woman to become queen. With Mia now set to rule Genovia, the third movie is expected to focus heavily on her story. Thus, Mia is expected to remain at the center of the third movie’s story.

The Princess Diaries 3 does not yet have an official release date.
