One of the actors in The Mandalorian and Grogu wants to reprise her role in a sequel. Despite the calls for another movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu 2 should not happen.

Sigourney Weaver will make her Star Wars universe debut as Colonel Ward in The Mandalorian and Grogu. In an interview with Total Film, Weaver shared her positive experiences on the set and expressed hope for a sequel.

“Well, in an ideal world, I’d love to make another Mandalorian and Grogu, because it was so much fun to work with Jon Favreau,” Weaver said. “And I’m a huge admirer, and just to be in this world, for me, it was cool. And I really like my character, and I’d love to do more work with Pedro and his sidekick.”

Weaver added, “So, I think that, secretly, we’re all hoping maybe this could produce another one that would take us further into the Outer Rim and more adventures.”

Why The Mandalorian and Grogu 2 should not happen

Despite Weaver’s comments, Lucasfilm should pass on making The Mandalorian and Grogu 2. First of all, the initial reactions for The Mandalorian and Grogu have been mixed, with a common criticism citing that it felt more like a longer episode of the Disney+ show than a movie.

ComingSoon.net’s Jonathan Sim called The Mandalorian and Grogu one of the “weakest Star Wars movies,” comparing it to a “long, colorless made-for-TV movie.” Similarly, Tyler Disney wrote that the movie felt like a “3-episode arc” and suggested it could have been a “Disney+ special.”

In Hollywood, money talks, and if The Mandalorian and Grogu reaches a worldwide gross near $1 billion, a sequel will get made. However, The Mandalorian and Grogu’s box office projections are unfavorable. Early estimates have the movie opening to $80-plus million over the Memorial Day weekend. While that number is excellent for a blockbuster, it’s disappointing for a Star Wars movie and could be the lowest in franchise history, not counting the original trilogy.

Lucasfilm should still walk away with a profit on The Mandalorian and Grogu. More importantly, it has relaunched the Star Wars franchise in theaters. However, not every Star Wars property needs to be a movie. The Mandalorian’s “Adventure of the Week” format is an ideal television premise that works better on Disney+.

Plus, Favreau already had plans for The Mandalorian Season 4 before receiving the call to make a movie about his bounty hunter. The Mandalorian and Grogu should transition back to Disney+, where they can remain Lucasfilm’s most valuable television property.

The Mandalorian and Grogu opens in theaters on May 22, 2026.
