The release date for the live-action Legend of Zelda movie has been pushed back.
It was announced in November 2023 that Sony Pictures was partnering with Nintendo to make a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. Directed by Wes Ball, the movie was originally given a March 26, 2027, release date.
Now, however, the release date for The Legend of Zelda has been pushed back by a little over a month.
When is the new The Legend of Zelda release date?
The Legend of Zelda movie now has a May 7, 2027, release date.
Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto posted on social media, “This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it.”
That means that The Legend of Zelda movie will now be released during the same month as Star Wars: Starfighter, as that arrives on May 28, 2027. Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie, which stars Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth, is expected to begin filming this fall. This means that production for The Legend of Zelda will likely begin around the same time, and that casting announcements could be coming in the near future.
At this time, however, there have been no casting announcements, and plot details remain under wraps.
Ball most recently directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which was released in 2024. He’s also known for directing The Maze Runner trilogy, which includes 2014’s The Maze Runner, 2015’s Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and 2018’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure. Additionally, it was announced last August that Ball is also working on a feature-film adaptation of the Ruiner video game for Universal Pictures.
