Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for The Handmaid's Tale Season 6, Episode 4.Few characters in The Handmaid’s Tale have been as unlikable as Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) when the show began airing, yet there is still a glimmer of humanity left in her. As arguably its most pious character, we've seen Lydia do horrible things in pursuit of her own beliefs, and only now does she begin to realize the system she has created for her girls. Watching her most beloved student, Janine (Madeline Brewer), call out her actions feels remarkably satisfying, yet it could prove to be the turning point for Lydia. Rather than truly challenging her beliefs, it's more likely she'll reaffirm them in her bid for total control, and that could lead to some momentous consequences.
