2026 has been a great year for new sci-fi projects, both on the big screen and TV shows on streaming. Several of the highest-grossing movies of the year belong to the sci-fi genre, with both The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (starring Anya Taylor-Joy) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (starring Tom Holland) both reaching the $1 billion milestone at the box office. While the former is an animated fantasy film and the latter is a Marvel superhero movie, both films heavily feature elements of sci-fi. Sci-fi shows have dominated the streaming landscape this year, and they continue to do so with new releases like Silo, the Apple TV series led by Rebecca Ferguson. Netflix’s biggest sci-fi show of the year was The Boroughs, but the series was canceled after only one season while still sitting in the top 10.
