The Batman 2 Won’t Bring Back Cristin Milioti’s Sofia: Here’s Why

Matt Reeves has confirmed that a key cast member from The Penguin will not appear in The Batman Part 2. The director explained that the script was already far along in development during the series’ production, though he praised the performance and suggested there could be opportunities for the role to return in future projects within the Batman universe.

Matt Reeves confirmed that Cristin Milioti will not return as Sofia Falcone in The Batman Part 2. Speaking at the Emmys, Reeves addressed her absence, saying, “Cristin’s not in this one, but that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show. But we’ll see. I mean, I think what she did in the show is just astonishing. That character, I mean, creating. So it would be really exciting to do something with her.”

Reeves explained further, noting the decision was driven by the direction of the film’s storyline. “In this one, in full disclosure, just because we were so far along in the story that it was like, oh, gee, it might upset the apple cart, let’s say, given where the story goes and what we were exploring. There are some things where it’s like, oh, we’d love to do this, but actually that doesn’t fit within where the story goes.”

Cristin Milioti recently earned widespread recognition for her performance as Sofia Falcone in HBO’s The Penguin. On September 14, 2025, she won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie. This was her first nomination and win for portraying Sofia, following a Critics’ Choice Super Award win and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.

In her acceptance speech, Milioti said, “It’s very hard to make sense of being alive right now in this world, so I’m deeply grateful for the bright spots. Getting to inhabit this woman was a bright spot for me, despite it being very grisly. Playing her felt like flying.”

Reeves also touched on the future of his Batman-related projects. He stated, “Obviously, the priority at the moment has been getting. We are now in prep, so that is really what the priority’s been.”

He continued, “But there have, from the beginning, I said that there were certain characters and certain things I wanted to do. And so I’m hoping now that that’s in, those conversations will begin again in earnest.”
