The science-fiction books I push hardest are usually the ones that leave behind a new problem in your head. Maybe consciousness can emerge somewhere completely unlike us. Maybe civilization would happily sacrifice children if the alternative were inconvenience. Maybe first contact is less exciting once you remember that intelligent species have no reason to arrive with our interests in mind. A great sci-fi novel gives you an impossible situation. A truly great one makes normal reality feel slightly different after you close it.
