For the longest time, Romantic and Gothic literature made it seem like supernatural fiction (whether that was fantasy, horror, or science fiction) could only ever be ghost or vampire stories with clear moral lessons and rational views of the supernatural. It was authors like Edgar Allan Poe who helped move supernatural literature away from these traditions, laying the foundations for a subgenre of speculative fiction that has come to be called "weird fiction."
