Sword-and-sandal epics are a special subgenre. Though the term originated to describe the Italian peplum films made in the '50s and '60s, it's been more generally applied to any of the epic films set in ancient times that often have an emphasis on bloody battle. They can be biblical, historical or even mythological, which means the line drawn between them and sword-and-sorcery movies can be as hard to define as those drawn in the sands of their battle scenes.
