“He is the pride of North Omaha and our hometown champion.” Omaha Mayor John Ewing had only praise for the 38-year-old on Saturday after he returned to the city recently after his emphatic victory over Canelo Alvarez. “He made history in more ways than one. He won with power. He won with smarts. He won with grace. And he won with the name ‘Omaha’ proudly emblazoned on his waist. When Bud won, we won.”

However, even Ewing might not have imagined what happened after the celebrations were over. As Sunday morning first broke, Omaha police pulled over boxing’s only male boxer with undisputed status in three different weight classes. He was held at gunpoint by the men in blue, alongside three other occupants of Crawford’s car. While Crawford is yet to provide a statement about his arrest, he was released and has made a different announcement.

Terence Crawford is looking forward to a new chapter

The undefeated switch-hitting boxer has been the subject of speculation, with his potential retirement from the sport leading the charge. With the win over Canelo Alvarez, there’s virtually nothing the five-division champion has to prove further in his career. Not to mention, he celebrated his 38th birthday today, an age closing in on retirement. So, Terence Crawford made things clear, writing on Instagram, “They say 38 is old, but I tell them I’m aging like fine wine. Chapter #38 is underway.”

He also shared a handful of pictures of himself, dressed in a blue and white striped polo shirt, white jeans, and a cap that read Omaha on the front. Crawford was standing in the middle of the road, with several cars on either side. Notably, Canelo had asked for a rematch, but given how dominant Crawford was, a rematch seems unnecessary. Only time will tell what the future holds for Terence Crawford, but he certainly has plenty of options to look forward to. Interestingly, he was recently involved in a heated feud with UFC champion Ilia Topuria.

A potential crossover boxing match can land both fighters with hefty paychecks, but the fight’s future remains uncertain. Regardless, coming back to Crawford’s arrest, what exactly caused the situation?

Police claim they saw a gun

Footage of Crawford’s arrest has since made its way to the internet, where ‘Bud’ emerged from the vehicle, his hands lifted high. After a quick pat down, the 38-year-old was placed in cuffs, as one of the occupants of Crawford’s car can be heard saying, “I am not reaching for a gun.” Meanwhile, the police claimed that they pulled over Crawford for reckless driving. The statement also claimed that they had seen a gun in the car while speaking to them.

The firearm in question belonged to a member of Crawford’s security team, and the officers determined that they were legally allowed to carry the gun. When Mayor Ewing heard about Crawford’s arrest a day after his praise for ‘Bud,’ he claimed his “heart dropped in learning of this end to an otherwise wonderful day and evening celebrating our city’s world boxing champion.”

Last update reveals that an “internal affairs investigation” has been launched into the matter. For now, though, Crawford doesn’t seem all that bothered by the incident as he shared an update about his future. What do you make of the situation?
