‘Swing and a Miss’: Madden Trailer Has Fans Split on Nicolas Cage’s Impression of Football Icon

Prime Video‘s new movie about American football coach and commentator John Madden has fans split over its first trailer. Madden, as the film is called, has already made a mixed first impression. While a section of the fandom is optimistic about the movie, others simply cannot accept Nicolas Cage as John Madden.

The movie also stars other big names, like Christian Bale, Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney, Sienna Miller, Joel Murray, and Shane Gillis. The movie is directed by David O. Russell. He is also credited as a writer on the project, along with Cambron Clark.

Why Nicolas Cage’s John Madden is sparking debate among fans

Fans are split on what to expect from Madden. Bale, Mulaney, and Gillis have received a lot of praise from fans. However, there is a reluctance to accept Nicolas in the role of the legendary American football coach. Several fans have taken to the internet to voice their discontent.

RC Politics co-founder Tom Bevan wrote, “I absolutely love Nicolas Cage, but I just can’t see him fully as John Madden. OTOH, I didn’t even recognize Christian Bale was playing Al Davis until the end of the trailer. He’s amazing.”

Other fans of Cage have also come out saying that the role simply does not seem to be made for the Ghost Rider alum. Podcaster @MisterGHF echoed the sentiment, writing, “I want this to be good. Like really good. Love Cage. Love Madden. But DAMN. This looks like it could be REALLY bad.”

Greg Wyshynski, Senior Writer at ESPN, is optimistic about what the movie has to offer, albeit being skeptical about Cage’s performance. He stated, “I had little interest in seeing this until they showed me Mulaney convincing Madden to endorse a video game and now I want an 8-episode limited series of just that.”

X user @DiaDia18 stated that Cage’s casting in the movies was a “Swing and a miss”. User @richard_ba15265 echoed the sentiment, saying, “I like Nic Cage but this role was miscast…I’m going to eventually watch it but it’s going to be hard to get past that performance.”

Madden will premiere on Prime Video on November 18, 2026.
