‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ will answer 19-year-old Nintendo mystery

A new description of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie seemingly confirms that the sequel will answer a 19-year-old Nintendo mystery.

The follow-up to 2023’s blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie is due to hit cinemas next week (April 1) and will see the return of Jack Black (Bowser), Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek).

Donald Glover will join the cast as Yoshi alongside fellow newcomers Issa Rae (Honey Queen), Wednesday’s Luis Guzman (Wart) and Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.) while Nintendo superfan Brie Larson will play Princess Rosalina.

Rosalina was first introduced in 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy and her backstory was slowly revealed throughout the game, via storybook pages. They confirmed that Rosalina was separated from her mother as a child and fans have spent the past 19-years theorising that Rosalia is somehow related to Princess Peach – either as sisters, or mother and daughter.

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario suggested that Peach may be from his world but she disagreed. “There’s a huge universe out there, with a lot of galaxies,” replied Peach.

Now it seems that The Super Mario Galaxy may finally reveal the connection between Peach and Rosalina. According to a new BBFC rating, the film contains “infrequent very mild upsetting scenes including flashbacks to the separation of a girl and her younger sister,” which many fans are speculating will be Rosalina and Peach.

However the decision to answer a long-running gaming mystery in a film adaptation is dividing opinions.

“People are saying how the movies and games are different, yes, we know that. But the general public does not. If they make Peach and Rosalina sisters in the movie, that’s how they will forever be seen. It’s such a drastic change to Rosalina’s lore, I don’t really like it,” wrote one fan on Reddit.

“This would be such a win for child me, I was obsessed with headcanoning Peach and Rosalina as sisters,” said another. Others are speculating that the sisters will be Lumas or Toads, with the connection between Peach and Rosalina left ambiguous.

“Mario and Luigi, the twin plumbers, apply their ‘let’s-a-go’ attitude to solve everyday problems all over their new home of the Mushroom Kingdom. As they support Princess Peach, and work to reform a miniaturised imprisoned Bowser, they meet a new companion – Yoshi,” reads the official description of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

“Princess Peach’s birthday party sparks a galactic adventure, sending the brothers into space to stop Bowser Jr.’s wicked ambitions and save Rosalina. The addition of the beloved characters Rosalina and Bowser Jr. adds extra spice of big action, comedy, and some shocking revelations to the adventure!”

In other news, a developer at Rockstar Games has revealed they spent over three years making broken glass look more realistic in Grand Theft Auto 6.
