Street Fighter 6 Year 4 Ushers in the Franchise’s Exciting Future

When it comes to the modern fighting game scene, Street Fighter 6 has been consistently wowing fans since it launched in June 2023, selling over seven million copies by the third anniversary of its debut. In addition to its ambitious World Tour mode, giving the franchise a sweeping story to explore, and a robust online multiplayer fanbase, Capcom has steadily supported the game with updates and new playable characters every year. At Tokyo Game Show 2026, we got to play around with Arjun, Year 4’s second fighter weeks before his official arrival on October 13.

Backstory released surrounding Arjun so far identifies him as a former Indian police officer framed for the murder of his partner and forced to go on the run. The game’s story places him on the hunt for the true killer in order to avenge his partner and clear his name, something that’s sure to be featured in his arcade mode and his appearance in World Tour. But beyond the requisite tragic origin story, Arjun feels like one of the most formidable new fighters to join the Street Fighter 6 fray and that was clear from our play session with him.

One of the most striking things about Arjun is his size, with the Indian warrior nearly being as big as the franchise’s longtime heavyweight Zangief. While this makes Arjun dangerous when he’s up close and personal, he’s also incredibly punishing even when opponents put some distance between them and him. Arjun has command over his breath in a way that’s similar to attacks by Guile and Dhalsim’s moveset. Forcefully exhaling gusts of wind, Arjun can use them for zone control like Guile’s timed Sonic Booms or fire them in a trajectory like Dhalsim’s Yoga Fire. Arjun can even create bursts of earth from the ground to knock hapless enemies into the sky.

Up close, Arjun hits like a truck and he’s got the reach to make even mid-range opponents at risk of being grabbed and absolutely pummeled within an inch of their life. Arjun can also use his prodigious breath control to temporarily give himself a defensive buff at the expense of his speed and mobility while this is active. And like so many Street Fighter 6 characters, Arjun’s Super and Critical Arts are cinematic showstoppers, with his Critical Art evoking the character’s love of Bollywood musicals.

Looking beyond Arjun himself, it’s clear that Capcom is really mixing things up with Street Fighter 6 Year 4, rather than playing it safe with the new characters they’re adding to the roster. The developers could’ve just as easily kept adding previously established characters from the history of the franchise, like the widely rumored Vega from Street Fighter II or someone a bit more obscure like Twelve from Street Fighter III: Third Strike; I’m personally hoping that we’ll get to see Skullomania from the Street Fighter EX trilogy someday. But instead, Year 4 features a lineup of brand-new characters, at least as far as Street Fighter is concerned anyway, with the surprise guest character of Tifa from Final Fantasy VII joining the game this season as part of a rare intercompany crossover.

Street Fighter 6 has celebrated the franchise’s history right from the very beginning, from its primary setting of Metro City from Final Fight to the full return of the main playable roster from Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. But the game’s DLC has also been taking risks every year, from the inclusion of Fatal Fury guest characters Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui in another intercompany crossover in Year 2 to the return of Ingrid from the widely maligned Capcom Fighting Evolution. The door is still open for more classic Street Fighter characters to be added to the game, but Capcom is taking a season to experiment with its lineup and be more additive rather than replaying greatest hits.

Arjun is another fresh face joining Street Fighter 6 and one that feels more intuitive to play than Season 4’s first new character, Yasmine. Both a muscular tank of a man and a zone-controlling powerhouse, it’ll be interesting to see how the character will shake up the competitive online scene once he becomes widely available to play on October 13. And with Tifa’s inclusion slated for early 2027 to help cross-promote next April’s Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Street Fighter 6 Year 4 has maintained excitement surrounding the game over three years after its debut.
