In a significant shift for PC gaming hardware standards, 32GB of RAM has officially overtaken 16GB as the most common memory configuration among Steam users. According to the September 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, 32GB systems now account for 42.22% of the platform’s user base, marking the first time the higher capacity has held the top spot after years of 16GB dominance.
The transition comes during a period of extreme volatility in the memory market. While hardware requirements for modern titles continue to climb, consumer costs have followed suit. Tom’s Hardware reports that retail RAM prices have surged by as much as 500% over the last 12 months. This pricing crisis is largely attributed to major memory manufacturers prioritizing the production of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for AI-focused data centers, which has significantly constrained the supply of standard consumer DRAM.
Market data indicates a sharp rise in 32GB configurations despite volatility in memory pricing.
The September data shows a sharp 4.77 percentage point increase for 32GB configurations compared to August, while 16GB systems fell to 37.82%.
GPU and Operating System Milestones
The move toward higher-end specifications extends beyond system memory. For the first time, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 has claimed the title of the most popular GPU on the platform, reaching a 5.86% share. This indicates a rapid transition of the Steam user base toward “50-series” architecture, despite the broader economic pressures on PC components.
On the software side, Windows 11 adoption has reached a new high of 71.34%. This milestone follows the official end of support for Windows 10 in late 2025, which has steadily pushed gamers toward the newer operating system to maintain security updates and compatibility with modern features like DirectStorage and Auto HDR.
Other notable trends from the TechPowerUp analysis of the survey include AMD’s continued gains in the processor market. AMD’s share of Windows CPUs on Steam rose to 47.41% in September, narrowing the gap with Intel as the competition for gaming performance remains tight. While 1080p remains the most common display resolution, the combined data of September suggests a community that is increasingly investing in mid-to-high-tier hardware to keep pace with the latest software demands.
